Oh, How the Wedding Party has Changed

Today it’s all about the couple. And as many say it is their wedding. So how do today’s couples decide who will be their bridesmaids and groomsmen? The answer is simple. It is whatever they want, according to wedding planner Char Gallagher of “Your DayYour Way”.

How many attendants and who should we include?

There is no trend anymore. You can have 1 or 15 bridesmaids and groomsmen. Maybe the couple want their closest friends standing next to them. Maybe they want family members standing next to them or both friends and family members.

Sometimes it’s a cultural decision as well. Many may want to respect their cultural traditions and some want to slightly change that.

What about the “kids” in the wedding party. Junior bridesmaids, flower girls, ring bearers are all up to the couple. Many couples decide not to have any children in the wedding party, others have a niece or nephew or maybe their own child that they want to include in the wedding celebration. You may see a flower girl but no ring bearer. Or a ring bearer and no flower girl. And don’t forget our furry friends. Get the picture?

If the bride comes from a large family and wants all her girlfriends and relatives in her wedding party but the groom has a very small family and not as many longtime friends, that’s OK. That works in today’s couples’ decisions. The groomsmen often will escort 2 bridesmaids, one on each arm when there are more ladies then men in the bridal party. The same is said for more ushers then bridesmaids. She will be escorted by two groomsmen one on each arm. It works and looks good and everyone is happy.

Don’t forget the ushers!

How many ushers do you need? That depends on the environment of the wedding ceremony. If the ceremony is at a church or any place of worship, you may need more ushers then you have groomsmen. Normally the ratio is one usher for every 50 guests. If you have an outdoor ceremony you need less ushers as the guests normally walk around and from all sides before taking their seats.

Todays brides and grooms want to look back at their bridal party photos and know they had those who hold a special place in their lives and hearts and they all were part of their special day.
